Staging Your Home For the Holidays

Any major holiday can make it difficult to stage a home, or does it? In reality, certain holiday decor can actually improve the overall look of your home and sell it faster. And you can most likely use some of the decorations you already own! So while the majority of the competition may not put homes up for sale during this season, your home can truly stand out. Here are some ways you can make your house shine in photos to sell your home during the holidays.

ASK YOUR REAL ESTATE AGENT

Find someone you can rely on for the duration of the holiday season and someone who has experience selling homes during this time. They may have some great decorating ideas that have worked before. Always check in with your real estate agent or photographer if you’re not sure about your decorations.

LESS IS MORE

Similar to any other time of the year, it is better to not add additional clutter to the inside of the home. Keep the decorations simple and leave the layout of the house clear. Try not to block out light from outside facing windows. If you decide to put up a Christmas tree, make sure it does not consume the space. Opt for a smaller or Skinny tree. If you want a wreath on your door, keep it small. Keep in mind excessive Christmas lights can make for difficult photos, so some may need to be turned off during a photoshoot.

PICK A THEME AND STICK WITH IT

Make sure that any decorations that go up match and fit together. You want to create a flow that goes throughout the space you are decorating. Choose colours that go together well, such as brown, red, green, and white for a more traditional look, or whites, golds, and silvers for a winter wonderland theme. Be sure that whatever theme you choose matches the current colours of your walls and floors. Remember that you are selling the home, not the decorations.

AVOID PERSONAL AND RELIGIOUS ITEMS

When decorating to sell the home, try to avoid showing large items that reveal personal photographs, names, memorabilia, or anything that represents any religious figures. While these may have personal significance to you, they may be off-putting to potential buyers. Keep to more neutral themed holiday decor. Examples include garland, basic coloured ornaments, pine or spruce branches, pine cones, holly, snowmen, and nutcrackers.

KEEP THE OUTSIDE TIDY

The winter season can be challenge to keep up with the weather. But try to stay consistent with keeping the sidewalks and driveway clear of snow. Any snow clearing devices such as shovels should be moved into a shed or garage. Be sure that any toys are put away and avoid any disturbances to the snow in the yard, such as snow forts or snowmen, during a photoshoot.

HAVE FUN!

Decorating for the season can be a fun way to express creativity and make your home into an inviting and beautiful space! Get creative and don’t be afraid to try new things.
